Shockwave Therapy Treatment
Shockwave therapy is a safe, painless treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to address joint and soft tissue conditions. It is particularly beneficial for treating long-term issues involving connective tissues like ligaments and tendons.
How can shockwave therapy help?
- Reducing pain
- Improving mobility
- Faster injury recovery
THE WHAT
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive procedure that promotes healing and reduces pain in soft tissues. It uses high-energy acoustic waves to break down injured tissue and calcifications. This improves blood circulation and speeds up the body’s natural healing processes, which can lead to tissue regeneration and pain relief.
While shockwave therapy can cause a small amount of discomfort, it doesn’t cause significant pain. Tolerance levels will always vary from person to person, but most people say they feel a pulsing or tapping sensation.
Shockwave therapy has been shown to be effective for treating conditions such as tendinitis and plantar fasciitis, with studies indicating a success rate between 72% and 80%. You will normally start to see significantly noticeable results about 6 weeks after treatment.

THE HOW
What issues can shockwave therapy treat?
- Shoulder pain and injures
- Heel and ankle issues
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Tendinitis
- Tennis elbow
- Shin splints
- Tight muscle knots
What happens in a shockwave therapy session?
During your first consultation, we’ll go through your relevant medical history. We will perform an examination and discuss the findings with you.
In a shockwave therapy session, the chiropractor uses a handheld radial shockwave device. This creates the shockwave energy that is passed into the affected area of your body. This stimulates new, healthy tissue growth. Each shockwave therapy session will last about 20 minutes.
THE WHY

Common Questions
Who can benefit from shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy is most effective for people with stubborn or long-term tendon and ligament problems that haven’t responded to rest, exercise, or manual therapy. Common examples include plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, tennis elbow, and shoulder calcifications. It can also help athletes and active individuals recover from recurring soft tissue injuries.
How is it different from other treatments?
Unlike painkillers or steroid injections that mainly mask symptoms, shockwave therapy stimulates your body’s own healing response. The acoustic waves break down damaged tissue, increase blood flow, and encourage new tissue growth, offering a more sustainable solution to chronic problems.
How soon will I feel results?
Many patients notice improvement within the first 1–3 sessions. The most significant results typically appear several weeks after completing the full treatment course, as the body continues to repair and regenerate tissue.
How many sessions will I need?
- Mild or moderate conditions: Usually 3–4 sessions.
- Chronic or complex conditions: Often 5–6 sessions.
Your chiropractor will adjust the treatment plan based on how your body responds.
What should I wear?
Wear loose-fitting or sports clothing that gives access to the treatment area (e.g., shorts for legs, vest top for shoulders).
Is shockwave therapy safe?
Yes. Shockwave therapy is non-invasive and has a strong safety record. It is approved for medical use and has been shown in studies to provide success rates of 70–80% for common musculoskeletal conditions.
Are there any side effects?
Mild redness, swelling, or tenderness in the treated area is normal and usually disappears within a few hours. Serious side effects are very rare when treatment is performed by a trained professional.
What should I do after treatment?
You can usually resume light daily activities straight away. Avoid strenuous exercise or high-impact sports for a few days to allow your body to recover fully.
