Common Questions
Who can benefit from joint injections?
Joint injections are especially helpful for people with osteoarthritis, chronic joint pain, or inflammation that has not responded to physiotherapy or medication. They can also benefit athletes or active individuals managing repetitive strain or joint overuse.
How do hyaluronic acid injections differ from steroid injections?
Steroid injections can offer quick pain relief but often only last for a few weeks to months. Hyaluronic acid injections work differently — they lubricate and cushion the joint, often providing longer-lasting relief (6–12 months) without some of the potential side effects linked to repeated steroid use.
What should I wear?
We recommend loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to the joint being treated. For knee injections, for example, shorts are ideal.
How soon will I feel results?
Some patients notice improvement within a few days, while for others it can take several weeks. Relief is gradual as the joint absorbs and benefits from the hyaluronic acid.
How long do the results last?
Most people experience 6–12 months of pain relief, depending on the severity of their condition and activity levels. Repeat treatments can be considered if symptoms return.
What should I do after treatment?
- Rest for 2–3 days and avoid strenuous activity.
- Keep to light walking and daily movements, but avoid running, heavy lifting, or high-impact sports for 2 weeks.
- Follow any personalised aftercare guidance given by your practitioner.
Are joint injections safe?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid injections are widely used and considered safe. Mild swelling or discomfort at the injection site is the most common side effect, usually resolving within a few days. Severe reactions are rare.
Who is not suitable for joint injections?
You may not be suitable if you have:
- A current infection in or around the joint,
- Severe joint damage,
- Certain allergies (which we will check in your consultation).
Your suitability will always be assessed carefully before treatment.
